In both first and second semester, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) hosts a school-wide blood drive. The spring semester drive was sponsored by the American Red Cross, and took place on March 17th.
One of the student volunteers includes junior student Ann Marie Partl. She says, “I enjoy helping out with the blood drive and doing a selfless act for such a compelling cause.”
Partl states she helps with the blood drive by, “signing people in, making sure they're comfortable, handing out shirts and snacks, and helping out where needed.”
Because the drive is school-wide, it often includes many student volunteers. This includes Collin Godowns, a sophomore student whom donates blood. He says, “the first time I gave blood was at the Fall blood drive here at the school and now I’m giving for the second time at the spring one!”
I have a rare blood type, O Negative, and it is the ‘Universal blood type,'” saya Godowns. “This means I can donate to everyone, so my blood is always needed and can be used no matter what. It is also the most used blood in cases of emergencies when they do not know the person's blood type. So, it is especially important to have.”
Godowns encourages his peers to donate as well, saying, “there are so many blood shortages, and we are in desperate need of blood. Blood is also a lifesaving treatment that is needed all the time, so it is important to have it when needed. It is an effortless process and saves three lives every time you give!”
