Headed by Mrs. O’Rourke, the Girls Go Cyber club gives girls at NAHS the chance to dive in to “an immersive cybersecurity training game for high-school students.”
It is part of Cyberstart America, a program which was established to help get people back into the cybersecurity workforce. This sector has been in desperate need of employees recently, with “over a million unfilled cybersecurity jobs” and women only making up 20% of the current cybersecurity workforce in the United States. Girls Go Cyber helps to solve this problem by encouraging young women to explore this career field in a fun and educational way.
Mrs. O’Rourke states that by joining, “students can learn about the field of cybersecurity & what cybersecurity involves…it's beneficial to understand what it is and what these professionals do to keep us safe.”
Girls Go Cyber also offers an opportunity for members to earn an award for NAHS. If 200 students (regardless of gender) play in the Cyberstart America game, a Gold “Cybersecurity Opportunity School” award can be earned. Girls who complete 20% or more of the game will be eligible to compete in the national Girls Go Cyber competition.
Though Girls Go Cyber is a club only for girls interested in cyber security, any students can participate in the Cyberstart America game, which runs through March. The program is completely free and there are no requirements to be a participant.
