The Sandspurs Coat Drive, a community service initiative, was started by North Augusta High School senior Taylor Muns. Partnering with the Sandspurs/yearbook class and the beta club, she collected coats that could be donated to students at North Augusta high school.
After the coat collection, Muns and other students took them down to the bus stop to be passed out to any students that wanted or needed a coat. The students were able to try on the varied sizes and styles of coats to find the perfect one.
The leftover coats were donated to CMONA, where they could be made available to people who need them.
“I wanted to host a coat drive because a lot of students who attend our school do not have coats during the winter months or know people who don’t have access to warmer clothes during this time,” says Muns.
The initiative was founded on the idea of “spring cleaning." Muns says that, “there are students who have way too many coats or old coats that no longer fit so, why not donate them to benefit your peers? I wanted to give students a fair opportunity to have resources they need to be comfortable during the winter month.”
Starting the community service initiative was a large project, but Muns believes that it allowed her to see the power of the North Augusta community. She says, “Being in a school where we can work together to make a difference is such a blessing. We have the opportunity to give back to others and make a difference for someone else.”
