"Devious Licks" and Bathroom Closures at North Augusta

There is a new viral trend where students take property from their high school and call it a ‘devious lick’. This trend might seem ridiculous, but it is very real and is happening at North Augusta High School.

Kyle Wales, a junior at North Augusta High School, says, “I think students stealing from the bathroom is stupid. Why would anyone want to steal something that takes away from others and possibly leave them with a criminal record?”

Mrs. Koonce, a teacher at North Augusta, voiced her opinion on the trend, saying, “I am extremely disappointed that students would destroy items in our bathrooms. We have a beautiful school and students should take pride in keeping it beautiful.”

Because so many students are taking stuff from the school bathrooms, they had to close many of them. Sean Fowley, a senior at North Augusta High School, said, “I know that the administrators at NAHS decided to block off the restrooms to prevent further vandalism and stealing, but I do not believe it is the right approach to handle these situations. It is an excessive approach to a simple problem; it is also unfair since only Men's restrooms are closed.”

However, Wales says, “I personally am not bothered by the bathrooms being closed. I hardly ever use the bathrooms but closing them is a necessary step in stopping the stealing.”

Koonce understood the closing of the bathrooms, saying, “I understand why the bathrooms had to be closed. We are limited in how we can handle this situation. It is misfortunate that the bathrooms had to be barricaded. It made it very inconvenient to allow students to use the bathroom during class since it would take them so long to get to an open bathroom.”

When asked if the closing of the bathrooms was a good approach, Fowley stated, “I don’t believe so. I understand that this approach is well-intentioned, but it is not right that the school is infringing our right to go use the restroom during the day. The majority should not be punished for what a small group is doing. Instead, there should be teachers who monitor who go in and out of the restrooms. After those people are finished using the restroom, the teachers should check for any damage done to the bathrooms. Then, monitors could easily find out who vandalized the restroom and punish them instead of all.”

Wales, however, disagreed stating, “I think closing the bathrooms is smart. It is much harder for people to steal something if they must climb over a large piece of wood covered in tarp.”

Koonce agreed with Wales, saying, “I do think that closing the bathrooms was a good approach. Something had to be done to end the vandalism. It sent a message to students to stop destroying the property. It also made other students hold those guilty parties accountable. Hopefully, the bathrooms can be open soon and students will learn to respect school property.”
