Environmental Club at NAHS: A Reality?

A person’s surroundings are their environment; environments can mold the people in them, or people can mold their environments. Several North Augusta High School students have attempted the latter, and seniors Margaret (Maggie) Johnson and Caylin Shuford are perfect examples.

Johnson and Shuford had the idea to start a club to do just that—mold their environment. They both wanted to do this in such a way that they would improve their environment. As Shuford puts it, “We wanted to start off small by having members of the club pick up trash around the school and campus, being more cautious about recycling. Our other plans included planting trees around the campus and other plants and finding environmentally cautious alternatives to potentially harmful practices around campus.”

Although they intended to be co-founders of the club, they derived inspiration for it in

separate ways:

“I wanted to start environmental club because I’ve always been passionate about the state of our environment since my mom first made my family start recycling in first grade. Now more than ever, our ecosystems and general environment need our help to maintain them. I thought that getting a group of people at our school together to work towards this goal would be a great first step to helping the planet we live on,” says Johnson.

“I started the environmental club because I've always been interested in environmental science and keeping our Earth clean. I got a few friends and pitched the idea of starting a club at the high school to help other kids understand the importance of taking care of our planet. I feel it’s important to be aware of what we’re doing to the earth our goal of the environmental club was to make students more aware of that,” says Shuford.

Although the efforts of these students were valiant, the stress of school and other activiteis has delayed the start of the Environmental Club. However, starting Environmental Club at NAHS is an idea that they are hopeful will soon become a reality, as the outcomes of this club would bring positive changes and attitudes toward our school’s environment.
