Fellowship of Christian Athletes

With these uncertain times, students are wondering how the clubs and activities they are involved in will continue. Many clubs have had to adjust how they run in order to keep students safe. One of the clubs that students at North Augusta High School are concerned about is FCA

FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) is sponsored by Coach Craig Gilstrap and is “an outlet for people to be able to worship and connect spiritually with people that they know and see every day in their classes,” explained Marshall Robinson, Senior member in FCA. This club allows strong bonds to form between members and can help students destress from all that is going on in their lives. After speaking with Coach Gilstrap, the future of FCA is still somewhat uncertain. He said he was “not sure how we will be able to meet until we are allowed to have larger gatherings.” Though that news may be somewhat disappointing, Coach Gilstrap still has some hope that “as we get students back to 5 days a week, that we may be able to have small gatherings.” However, NAHS administration will have to approve that.

Numerous current and former members of FCA have similar hopes and ideas as to how FCA will function this year. Kelsey Toole, former FCA member, said, “I hope that FCA this year is exact same way [it was last year] because with everything going on, it is so important to have some sense of normalcy.” Sean Fowley, junior, shared the same sentiments, saying, “I hope we get back in the swing of things and get to operate like a normal club again… Hopefully we will be able to get together soon and be able to worship while practicing social distancing.” Robinson gave the most insight as to how FCA might run this year, saying, “FCA this year will most likely start out virtual with pre-recorded messages and worship. Hopefully we can find a way to have FCA during school while staying socially distanced, which may mean having it in the cafeteria.”

Former and current members of FCA, along with Coach Gilstrap, hope that FCA can run somewhat normally in order for them to connect with others and worship. The true future of FCA is still uncertain, and it may not be the exact same as it has been in years past. Hopefully, it will be able to at least function virtually, if not in person.
