Hall of Fame

“Hall of Fame is a tradition of North Augusta High School that dates back decades,” stated Mrs. Gambill, one of the teachers at North Augusta in charge of Hall of Fame. “It is a tradition of recognizing the top ten best all-around students; not necessarily the most academically gifted, not necessarily the most athletically gifted, but the ten students who most represent the best about the student body of North Augusta High School.”

For years, North Augusta High School has been doing Hall of Fame. Every year, seniors sign up, nominating themselves, hoping to get this honor. To be nominated for Hall of Fame, seniors had to turn in the first page of their application to Mrs. Gambill by November 20th. Doing this puts them on the list of students running, and on December 4th, the senior class will vote from this list. However, this is not the end of the process. The students who win the senior vote do not automatically get into Hall of Fame. If they get chosen through this vote, they will be contacted by December 14th, and they then must fill out the rest of the Hall of Fame application and turn it in by January 4th. Finally, the teachers and the rest of the faculty vote and choose the ten students who will receive the honor of being in the Hall of Fame. Mrs. Gambill explains the process as a “plurality vote by the student body and then a plurality by the faculty and staff.”

Last year, the Hall of Fame consisted of North Augusta High School students Eddie Burch, Ryan Hendrick, Kamora Johnson, Rebeckah Ogbuefi, Caroline O’Neal, Rebecca O’Neal, Matthew Owings, Brayden Poorvin, Bear Smoker, Blake Swanson, Kelsey Toole, and Noah Whitfield. Eddie Burch described his experience as a shock, stating “It was a good experience. I had no idea that I won, so it was a big surprise.” The Hall of Fame assembly for the 2020-2021 school year is currently scheduled for Friday, January 29th, 2021. However, because of the pandemic, Mrs. Gambill is concerned that there might not be an assembly this year. Her hope is that Mr. Murphy will allow her to let the senior class attend the assembly and then have it broadcasted to the rest of the school, as she believes that the assembly is important. She states, “I really think it’s meaningful for the senior class to see the ten students that they picked that they feel are the best representatives of the senior class.”

The students chosen for Hall of Fame are special. They are liked by everyone—teachers and students alike. They are the best of North Augusta High School. “They are the sort of students…that we feel will bring honor to North Augusta High School,” explains Mrs. Gambill. Not only are these exemplary students honored at the Hall of Fame assembly, but they are also honored with their own section in the yearbook, and with a plaque. Outside of the art room, there is a plaque that lists the names of all of the students who have been selected to be a part of the Hall of Fame. Through this plaque, they are remembered by North Augusta High School forever.
