Palmetto Girls State is an annual event in South Carolina, hosting young women from all across the state to learn more about government and politics.
In choosing delegates from North Augusta High School, the American Legion Auxiliary honors hardworking girls young women whom are striving to make a difference in their community. This year three girls were asked to attend this event, they were all juniors, Mackenzie Ainsworth, Emma Carter, and Greer Worley.
Possible delegates complete a multi-step process to receive this award.
Greer Worley, a junior at NAHS said, “I was selected into girls state by first submitting an application with all my transcript and achievement information on it, then I went through an interview process where ladies that represented the American Legion asked me a series of questions ranging from my past accomplishments to my future goals.”
Students prepared in several ways; Worley said, “I prepared by writing up a word document with research I did regarding the American Legion and the Palmetto Girls State, as well as adding my achievements so that I could refresh my brain of everything before walking into the interview. My parents also helped me prepare by going over some practice questions the week leading up to the interview.”
Mackenzie Ainsworth, a junior, also prepared by, “(looking) up commonly asked questions for the interview portion and refreshed my brain on the program and South Carolina Politics.”
The day of the interview, all possible delegates were notified of their status as either: chosen, alternate, or denied from the Girls State program.
Ainsworth said, “When I found out the news that I had gotten in, I was so excited and just felt so much relief from all the stress leading up to interviews. It just felt like such a big accomplishment for me, and I could not wait to find out more information about the camp.”
Worley is excited about the camp, and feels that it will be beneficial for her and her future.
She said, “I think Girls State will help me earn better leadership skills and a better sense of how the government runs. I also think it will help me branch out and make new friends since I will be there for a week with girls I have never met.”
As the three delegates prepare for the camp in the summer of 2022, the North Augusta community offers their continued support so that they may succeed in all they do.
