2020 has gone by quickly, and soon, North Augusta High School seniors will be graduating. However, before they graduate, they have many responsibilities that they need to take care of. Seniors need to apply to college, apply for scholarships, decide what to do after high school, and get ready for graduation. Luckily, North Augusta High School has a team of six talented guidance counselors that are always willing to help. Our guidance counselors are Mrs. Williams, Mr. Forrest, Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. Rowland, Mr. Long, and Mrs. Lusk.
Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. Rowland, and Mrs. Lusk expanded on their roles as guidance counselors. “Our role…is to advertise the scholarships that we receive… we advertise the scholarships that we receive, and we educate our seniors on their state-funded scholarships, like LIFE and Palmetto Fellows, and which ones they qualify for,” said Mrs. Rowland. “We also write recommendations for students that are applying to college if the college requests it,” continued Mrs. Lusk. Mrs. Stewart finished, saying, “We also send out an email to teachers to share [scholarship information and dates] with you all. It goes into your Schoology…and then, in the Remind, we text it.”

Every month, a newsletter is sent out with information about different scholarships that students can complete and important dates for seniors. This newsletter can be found in many places, including the Counseling webpage on the North Augusta High School webpage. Scholarships are important because they can help students pay for college. As Mrs. Stewart said, “It’s free money!” Like college applications, some scholarships require letters of recommendation, which our guidance counselors are more than willing to write. However, Mrs. Stewart said that “we do ask that students give us a resume. One thing that I think is hard for students to grasp is that there are six of us and over three hundred of y’all, so we need time to write them.” If you are needing a letter of recommendation, please be courteous and give your counselor ample time to write one.
Recently, North Augusta High School hosted a College Application Day where seniors could get information and help with applying to college. And our guidance counselors are hoping to host an Instant Decision Day next semester. “We hope to have an Instant Decision Day, which is where we typically work with USC-Aiken and Aiken Tech…Students will sign up in the counseling office to participate, and [the colleges] will review students’ transcripts and test score data, and students can possibly receive acceptance on the spot,” explained Mrs. Rowland.
Right now, the most important date for seniors is December 1st. “December 1st is the deadline to order your cap and gown at the price that it was in the fall. You can always order later, but it might cost more,” said Mrs. Stewart. So, for every senior who has not ordered graduation supplies yet, the guidance counselors urge you to do it soon! For more information about scholarships, graduation, college, or anything else, do not hesitate to contact a guidance counselor. Joining Remind by looking at the newsletter is also encouraged, and emailing guidance counselors is encouraged if you have any questions or concerns.
