Are you interested in learning the techniques of attorneys, and how to build a defensible argument? If so, you should look into joining the Mock Trial team, run by Ms. Marion. Students who join Mock Trial can expect to learn how to build defendable law-based arguments, and apply them in an actual court setting. This club offers different opportunities for all students at North Augusta High School, especially those who want to go to law school or enjoy the theatrics of formulating and acting out a defense or questioning a witness. Mock Trial is mentored by practicing licensed attorneys, who offer invaluable experience and add an element of realism to the experience. Mock Trial begins this October, and meetings will alternate between in-person and virtual meetings depending upon student schedules.
Mock trial competitions this school year will be held virtually. However, traditionally, students attend a functioning courthouse in the Columbia Lexington area where they compete in the regional championship. To advance to the state competition level, participants are tasked with winning 3 rounds of trial scenarios in which they will be assigned to be the prosecution or the defense. Rounds are generally two hours in duration, with the winner moving onto the next round in a bracket-like system of elimination. The winner is selected by judges who determine which team had the most concrete argument and application of specific laws. Students have the opportunity, during a normal school year, to travel to different locations if their mock trial team moves on to state level competition. Similarly, national level events take place around the country, and if a mock trial team progresses and qualifies in certain competitions, they will have the opportunity to attend those events.
Ms. Marion encourages students to join mock trial if they are interested in debate or law in any form. She also aims to teach students “to argue with intelligence, not emotion” as they gain experience through mock trial.
