During this time of year students and teachers at North Augusta High School are looking forward to one specific thing: spring break! Spring break is a week during April that students have time off from school and other activities. This year, spring break is April 5th through the 9th, not including Good Friday that is off, on April 1st. Most students go on trips or spend time with their families and friends. For some, spring break will look a little different because of COVID. One of the biggest questions of this spring break is how safe travel will look, or if people will even be able to get the opportunity to travel.
Everyone is doing something different for spring break, although most seem to be going out of town. Joshua Beaufort, a sophomore at North Augusta High School, said, “For my spring break, I will be traveling to Hilton Head, SC with my family.” Beaufort continued, saying that he is doing the same thing as always, “I, along with my family, normally visit Hilton Head SC each year during the week of spring break.” Not only students have plans for spring break however, many teachers have plans as well. Kathryn Gambill, a science teacher from NAHS, said, “For spring break, I will be going to Florida to see my mom and to Virginia to see my granddaughters, of course!”
With going out of town during COVID, it leads to the question of how people will do it safely. When asked about this issue, Gladys Laube, a sophomore at North Augusta High School, said, “I know that COVID is still a huge thing so, of course, I will wear my mask and not sit close or swim close to other people on the beach.” Gambill agreed with this sentiment, stating, “I will be flying to Florida and driving to Virginia. I will just follow the guidelines that are in place for each one of those states.” Many people will be doing different things this year to keep themselves and others safe from COVID. Laube said “This year many people will be staying home and making sure they stay safe. Many eating places won't be open this year and everyone will be wearing masks.” Gambill again agreed with Laube, stating, "Yes, I am not flying to LA because my son is getting married the next month and we can't take a chance on getting sick right before the wedding.” It seems that although COVID will impact spring break in North Augusta, people are still making the best of the situation and plan to have a fun week off.
