Student Council

Student Council is an extracurricular activity at NAHS ran by students and sponsored by Mr. Travis Spears. Students can be representatives of their class, or hold leadership positions. These include class president, class vice president, class treasurer, class secretary, student body president, and student body vice president. Sean Fowley, a junior at North Augusta High School, shared “I wanted to have a say in what goes on at our school.” He and many others agreed when asked why they decided to participate in student council.

Much of the work conducted by student council is done behind the scenes, supporting school and community events. “At student council meetings, we work together to plan for special events around our school, like homecoming, pep rallies and spirit week” said Lia Murphy, a junior at NAHS. Events at North Augusta wouldn’t be able to be pulled off so smoothly without them. Fowley also shared that student council helps the community, stating “we organize events for the community and participate in community service.”

When asked why student council is so beneficial to students, Murphy said, “By attending meetings, working with others, and planning events, members of student council are preparing for the business world.” Hailey Gross, a junior at NAHS, agreed with Murphy, saying, “it prepares you for the business world because in business you’ll have to make important decisions and organize things.” A general consensus among members seems to be that student council prepares students for the business world, in many different ways.

“Some good characteristics of a student council member are leadership, dependability, and teamwork, and critical thinking skills, so they can perform their positions within student council to the best of their abilities” stated Fowley. People who hold leadership positions need these great characteristics in order to prosper in their position, therefore making student council a very good benefit to the lives of students in that way. Murphy also stated, “I would recommend student council to an underclassman, because it’s a great way to get involved and meet people all across the different grade levels.” If you would like to be a part of student council, either this year or next year, contact Mr. Spears in the Social Studies wing to receive more information.
