Students' Female Role Models

Women’s History Month spans from March 1st to March 31st and serves as a time for people to show appreciation to the important women in their lives, particularly the role models they look up to. Each can be classified separately—some may be young, or old, athletic, or musically gifted—yet they all fit the definition of a role model: “a person looked to by others as an example to be imitated.” Two of our students, Thomas Monahon and Hannah Waterman, shared who their female role models are:

Monahon stated, “My female role model is Serena Williams. She plays with composed aggression and relentless ambition. She is one of the best female athletes of all time. I look up to her for her hard work and confidence. Serena is a huge advocate for African American and women’s rights; acting as someone we should all strive to be like.”

Waterman stated, “When I think of female role models, I think of my mom. My mom has been such a steady resource of support, knowledge, and love. My mom is such a dedicated and hard-working person and inspires me to be the same. She has taught me that fueling fire with fire does nothing, and kindness should always be your first reaction. Her endless impacts on my life and their positive consequences make her my female role model.”

Although these two students have different role models, they both look up to them for the same reason: they want to be like them, in one way or another. This month is a perfect time for people to reach out to the women who have impacted their lives, if they are personally known, and thank them for their positive contributions.
