This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the activities that the Senior Class looks forward to, have not been able to take place. One of the most well-known activities is the Senior Prom. Of course, with taking all of the necessary precautions, having a Prom in the normal setting is simply not able to happen. The North Augusta High School staff has proposed an alternative for the Prom—the Golden Gala.
The Golden Gala has been described as a formal event where Seniors will enjoy a formal banquet, pictures, awards, and video presentations in celebration of their time at North Augusta High School. One NA Senior, Robbie Hardy, shared his thoughts on the subject. He feels that “the Gala is what we make of it and if we treat it like a watered-down, boring awards day that’s what it will feel like,” so he planning to dress in the same attire he would for Prom. The same is true for other Seniors, such as Brandy McNair, Bailey McNair, Caylin Shuford, and Anthony Harrell. They all feel that this event should be treated with the same attitude as the traditional Prom, including formal attire.
Shuford shares that she and her friends will “probably get together beforehand and take pictures and stuff like that, like you would usually do before Prom.” Bailey McNair believes it will not be exactly like Prom, but a “formal event to appreciate the last memory we will all have together with our class of 2021.” One who agrees with this idea is Brandy McNair. She would prefer to have a Prom in the traditional sense, but she is planning on buying a formal dress and attending the Gala.
Hardy also shares that he believes “nothing can replace Prom, but with the circumstances of today’s world, the Gala seems to be the best option and I’m satisfied with that.” In addition to these thoughts, the other Seniors appreciate the fact that the Gala is exclusive to Seniors. Harrell said, “I wouldn’t mind a prom only for seniors, since we lost ours last year, but I’m glad we can do something at least to recognize our achievements.” Shuford agrees with this as she feels that “a night for just seniors to replace everything we would’ve gotten is a good alternative,” and Bailey McNair had similar thoughts with saying that “seniors have missed out on a lot and there is no next time for us, therefore, we have to make it the best and take the bad with the good.” North Augusta is doing what it can for the Class of 2021, and the Golden Gala is an event these students are looking forward to, with both its positive and negative aspects.
