The Masters is one of the most famous and influential golf tournaments in the world. This tournament has been taking place every year since 1934. Since the start, it has been in Augusta, Georgia at the Augusta National Golf Club. The Masters brings thousands of people to the neighboring city of North Augusta each year.
However, this tournament has not always been what it is today. When this tournament started, it was called the Augusta National Invitation Tournament, designed as a way for the owners Clifford Roberts and Bobby Jones to give back to the game of golf. Eventually, they changed the name of the golf tournament to The Masters.
The first recognized winner of this tournament was Horton Smith, who shot a 285 in his four rounds of play or –3 below par. He was also the first player to ever become a two-time Masters winner by winning the first and third Masters.
Even though he is a two-time winner, he never wore the coveted green jacket when he won. The infamous green jacket that many players wish to wear was not always a tradition.
The green jacket was originally a way for members of the Augusta National to stand out on the course during the tournament. The tradition of awarding a green jacket to the winner started in 1947 when Sam Snead won the tournament.
Jack Nicklaus, who won the Masters six times during his career, had the opportunity of wearing the green jacket two years in a row since he won the tournament back-to-back.
The Masters golf tournament is an event and tradition like no other. Whether working the tournament, observing it, or participating in the many activities during Masters week, all North Augusta residents have the opportunity to be a part of the tournament and its festivities.
