Every year the month of March is known as Women’s History Month. Women’s History Month is a month dedicated to the contributions and sacrifices women have made over the years. The celebration started as a week on March 7, 1982, as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987 the week transitioned into a month-long event.
When asked about an influential woman in her life, Bailee Boatwright, a sophomore at North Augusta High School said, “Michelle Obama because she is an advocate for women’s rights.” Mrs. Kasey Davidson, a teacher at NAHS, struggled to name one role model, as she said, “There are countless women throughout history who have inspired me and challenged the status quo. There are lots of examples throughout history. Just to name a few, Eleanor Roosevelt, Nelly Blythe, Claudette Colvin, and many others. Although, one comes to mind, I just finished an article on Irena Sendler. She smuggled thousands of Jewish children out of the Warsaw ghetto to their safety during World War II. She recorded all their names, put them in a jar, and buried it. After the war, she attempted to unite as many of the children with their surviving relatives as she could. She serves as inspiration to all of us, and me, because she chose to do the right thing no matter the circumstances. She risked her life and those around her to fight against tyranny.” Not all women role models must be famous; Conner Hill, a junior at North Augusta High School, said, “My mom, because she is very successful and has supported me in everything I do.” Women role models can come from any and everywhere.
Women’s history month means different things to everyone. When asked what it means to her, Boatwright said, “Women’s history month personally means a lot because feminism and women’s rights are very important to me.” Mrs. Davidson stated, "it is incredibly important to recognize the contributions and achievements of women throughout history. Women's History month gives us a chance to do that.”
Everyone interviewed agreed that Women’s History Month is very important. Boatwright expounded upon this, saying, “I think it’s extremely important. Since the dawn of time women were less than, and now is the time to change that.” Mrs. Davidson agreed with the same understanding, stating, “It's important because women have often been overlooked and mistreated. It is important to recognize that and honor them.”
There are many accomplishments women have made throughout history. Hill says, “I think voting rights was the most important accomplishment made.” Boatwright agreed, saying that, “the passing of the 19th amendment, granting women the right to vote” was one of the largest accomplishment’s women have made. Mrs. Davidson agreed with those statements, yet also said that “The suffragette movement, the civil rights movement, and the #MeToo movement were all incredibly important for women. Just to name a few.” There are many amazing accomplishments that have changed the way of live for women forever and it’s important that the world has a month to celebrate them!
