For the past two academic years, many things have been different than ever before. Much of these new aspects come with education. However, there are many new things adjustments with sports as well. One sport that has had to make an adjustment to the new way of doing things is softball. A well-respected team in the state of South Carolina, the North Augusta softball team has been the top team in its region for the past several years.
This year, however, things for the North Augusta softball team will be very different.
One softball player, Nevaeh Ross, says that one thing that has been different this year is the level of conditioning. In past years there has been a set number of practices where the team was able to practice their sport. This year though they were only allowed a few weeks for just strict conditioning. Ross says, “our new way of doing things will hopefully keep us in shape for the season better than before.” After just a few short weeks of conditioning, tryouts will be held for the team, and the season will begin.
This year's schedule for softball will be another adjustment the team will have to make. Normally scrimmages are played in preparation for the season. However, due to a later start date for the season this year, less scrimmages will happen, resulting in less preparation before the first game of the season. Roo Howell, a sophomore on the team, says, “the past two years have definitely been two for the books, but I am super excited to see what this season has in store for us.” Game times will be another change this year. In a normal year, the team would play on the weekdays and play different teams throughout the week. This year, there will be some weekend games and the team will face the same school two times in one week, one away and one at home.
All these challenges will be something new for the softball team to try and compete in. The girls on the softball team are still very excited for this upcoming season no matter how different it may be and hope to have support from the North Augusta community as this season begins.
