NAHS Football Team Adjusting to a New Coach

North Augusta High school ranked 18th in the AAAA-division and so far, this year the team has faced 5 strong teams. Evans, Dorman, Lakeside, Greenwood, and last Friday night they faced Dutch Fork High school.

After a tough start to the season, the team has managed to fight through adversity and will continue playing strong as we move into our regional teams.

This year we were introduced to a new coach, where the team came together and began to put in the work. Over the summer, our boys worked every day getting ready for the competition ahead of us.

As the season began, we interviewed head coach Matt Quinn to see how he is feeling about his first season here at North Augusta.

“Coming in blind was a little different but the team, the staff, the administration, and town has accepted me and understands what we are trying to build here at North Augusta.” Coach Quinn has spent 10 years coaching total and spent the previous five years as head coach at Westwood High School.

Once transitioned and comfortable, Quinn's’ first goal was to create personal bonds with each individual player.

“The relationships have been great. We put an emphasis on that early when I came to North Augusta; to let the kids know that we care about them more than just football players, but as young men.”

Being a part of this team is more than a jersey you wear. It is being all-in and being part of something bigger than yourself, you are now part of the family. As manager of the football team, seeing how each player interacts with their teammates and coaches really proves that this team has a strong bond on and off the field.

The season is quickly approaching an end, and we are beginning the start of our “region season goal.”

Coach Quinn stated that the season is broken up into three sections; each with a specific goal.

“Our non-region goal is to get better every week, then the next goal is the region goal and that is to win the region championship. Then in the third goal, the play-off season, our goal is to win a state championship.”

It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season unfolds. If each team member performs to their capability and genuinely believes in what Coach Quinn is doing, we really have a shot to accomplish all three goals. It is faith in the process, trust in the coaches and relying on your fellow players.
