“I think our team chemistry is the best it's ever been this year, I think everyone gets along well and we can all communicate with each other perfectly fine,” says Emma Shiver, senior tennis player at North Augusta High School. This vote of confidence from Shiver demonstrates that the North Augusta High School tennis team has not only a willingness to stay connected, even through a pandemic, but also showcases their ability to establish bonds and cooperation in short periods of time. These traits are especially important because of the upcoming clash with South Aiken. The team’s threat comes from their maintained title of number one in the region. Hopes, however, are high for the outcome of the game this year.
To prepare for such matches, Autumn Jones, senior tennis player, states that “we’ve practiced every single day since the middle of August.” These avid practices in troubling times have not only improved skill, but also the love of the game. Two individuals that have been especially impacted are players Bailey and Brandy McNair, who were recognized by both Jones and Shiver to have improved greatly over the months they have been practicing. They have improved both the game and the team spirits. “They have worked so very hard to get where they are right now.” Jones explains. “They’ve really stepped up this season,” Shiver emphasized.
When asked about who has shown to be the most consistent player over the years, Shiver points out that, “Ansley Hooks has been number one for the past couple of years.” This trend is sure to continue as Hooks improves through hard work and dedication. Hooks, being a sophomore this year, still has an entire two years of tennis at North Augusta High School ahead of her. She is a player to watch when attending North Augusta High School tennis matches.
The North Augusta tennis team currently has “five singles and one doubles team,” Shiver said enthusiastically as she explained she will be playing singles this year. This team
is constantly growing together as both a team and a family. The skill level and chemistry of the tennis team makes for a wonderful viewing experience and entertaining game for tennis enthusiasts and newcomers alike. It truly looks to be a promising season for North Augusta tennis.
