As cheer tryouts are approaching, students at North Augusta High School are preparing. Cheer tryouts for the new 2021- 2022 cheer team will be the week before spring break. Cheerleading is a great way to meet new people and get involved in new things. As for the new teams, things will work as they always have. Freshman and Sophomores will try out to be a part of the junior varsity cheerleading team, and Juniors and Seniors will try out to be a part of the varsity cheerleading team. As students prepare for tryouts, they are given a cheer, a chant, and a dance to learn the week of tryouts at clinics that they will perform on tryout day.
When asked about this process, North Augusta High Junior Emily Collins, and current varsity cheerleader, stated that she believes “tryouts will still be fun this year. We just have to be cautious about what we’re doing over the next three days. I’m excited to be able to practice with my friends because it’s always a great time.” Collins mentions an important aspect of cheer tryouts this year: COVID-19 protocol. Kendra Sterling, Senior at North Augusta, was also interviewed about upcoming tryouts. Concerning COVID-19 protocol, she states that “cheer tryouts, like everything else this year, will definitely be affected by COVID. We are planning on having try outs more normal this year, with a two-day clinic followed by one day of try outs. With that being said, we will be required to social distance and wear our masks.”
As the North Augusta cheerleading team transitions into a new year, many of the cheerleaders will be leaving, as they are seniors. Tiara Missey, a current senior cheerleader, stated that “being a cheerleader at North Augusta allowed (her) to be more involved in school activities throughout high school. If (she) wasn’t a cheerleader, (she) thinks (she) would have been less involved and had a less spirited view of (her) school and its activities.” As these seniors leave, rising seniors will soon be entering their final year of cheerleading at North Augusta. Taylor Muns, current junior cheerleader on the varsity team, states “I am so pumped for my senior year football season! Football season is my favorite and since it’s senior year, I am determined to have the best year yet!” North Augusta is wishing its cheerleaders the best during their upcoming tryouts and as they move into a new year in the upcoming months.
