We have about 50 members on our team this year,” Savannah Padgett, senior on the cross-country team at NAHS, says. “This year we have one of the biggest groups of girl runners – almost 15,” Padgett adds. “I think this season will be good, and I think everyone will end up making a lot of improvements,” says Emma Daniels, junior cross-country runner.” Padgett states that the year prior, “both our girls and boys varsity teams made it to the state competitions.” With 50 members, cross-country is hoping to make it to state competition once more.
Padgett explains that due to the pandemic, “our schedule was cut back drastically, but we all practiced really hard.” Even through the difficulties that come with limited practices, “everyone was so supportive and motivational,” Daniels says. This motivation came from two main cross-country participants, Tommy Burch and Devin Brown. “Tommy Burch,” says Daniels, “works really hard and continues to push himself to be better.” Padgett adds that, “Devin is such an encourager. Any time I pass by Devin while practicing, he is quick to say an encouraging word.” These two athletes make sure to motivate their teammates through hard work and encouragement.
“Our most promising seniors include Trey Stallings and Riley Veraldi, and our most promising younger runners are Ben Burch and Grace McKenzie,” Padgett states. These players have placed towards the top for most cross-country meets. So far, the cross-country team has attended four meets. With half a season ahead of the team, and competition with Aiken, the cross-country team is positive in their ability to compete in state competition.
“Some of my favorite moments of cross country are when I beat my time and see my work paying off,” says Daniels. Padgett offers encouragement for those interested in cross-country by saying, “cross-country takes dedication and hard work, but crossing the finish line and watching your team cheer you on is one of the best feelings.”
