The Jackets first home football game was held Friday, September 25 against Blythewood High School. This first football event of the season was huge for athletes, students, community members, and faculty alike. Because of the current pandemic, many things, such as the football season, were questionable. This makes the new season that much more special, and everyone was excited to be able to come and support the Jackets as they played their first home game.
The Jackets had to make many changes to their usual football season routine this year. Not only were there no contact practices and individual player water buckets, but they also have a new head coach. Coach Bryant has done many things to ensure the safety of his assistant coaches and his players.
A few of the Jacket football players were interviewed earlier this week to find out their thoughts on the upcoming season. When asked about how he felt about this week’s game, Jack Greenway, Grade 11, stated, “This week’s game will be exciting and interesting for everyone with all of Covid going on, and I feel as if Coach Bryant has done his job to prepare us in the best way possible. It’s time for us to execute the game plan.” Kyrrin Roundtree, Grade 11, was asked about how he thought Covid- 19 has affected this football season. He stated, “Covid- 19 has affected this football season greatly from the way we play to the way we get water. Luckily everyone on the team has been safe.” When asked about what the team did differently this year to prepare because of Covid- 19, Chase Tillman, Grade 11, stated, “We had to wait three months before we could do anything football related. Then we had to go through phases based on the South Carolina High School League guidelines.” Austin Harrell, Grade 11, was asked how he thought the season will go with a new coach. He stated, “I think the season should go very well with a new coach. We have a good team this year, and he has us going in the right direction.”
The Jackets played a very good game but fell short in the fourth quarter to an extremely talented Bythewood team. The Jackets lost the game with a final score of 27 to 24.
