With a season filled with challenges, the NAHS swim team overcame their obstacles, specifically with the help of two new coaches. The swim team has placed well in each of their meets, and recently competed in the state finals. The girls’ swim team traveled to North Charleston Saturday morning, October 10th, to compete and the boys’ swim team traveled on October 12th to compete. Coach Thompson expressed “The most memorable moments for me is watching a swimmer that has worked their hardest in practice every single day to make the time that they were hoping for. They are a testament to achievement through hard work and are a prime example of leadership and dedication for the rest of the team to see. The encouragement and support of the rest of the team for their fellow teammates was awesome to experience as well.” Coach Thompson added “I am very excited for all of the swimmers headed to state as they have all prepared to put themselves into a position to succeed. I expect them to do the same things that they have done all year and that is to go out and compete at the highest level that they can. They are ready!”
Before the state competitions, members of the swim team were asked their thoughts on the competitions. Senior member Madden Bell says “I think I’ll do well; I’m seeded better than I’ve ever been at a state championship before.” He is scheduled to compete in the 50 free, 100 fly, 200-free relay, and the 200-medley relay. Senior member Max Hopper expresses “It is my final swim season at a school, and I am placed higher than ever. I am going to push myself and crush it. Last one fast one.” As Bell and Hopper express their goals for their individual placings, Sophomore member Drew Pond goes on to explain how he thinks the team will do overall. Pond says “I feel as though we’ll do the best we’ve ever done as a team and as individuals. We’re seeded 18th in the state and feel as though we can definitely break through the top 10 this year and keep that energy.”
On Saturday, the girls swim team competed in state finals. Junior, Haley Winburn says her experience was “really fun and exciting.” Winburn competed in the 200-medley relay swimming back in it and the 200-free relay. Junior member Katie Swann says “The experience overall was absolutely amazing. I made so many amazing memories with the 4 other girls.” Swann states “I swam the 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard individual medley, 200-yard free relay, and the 100 breast-stroke.” Winburn and Swann both shared “The medley finished 14th and we swam a 1:06.90 and the free finished 15th with a 1:55.54.” We appreciate all of the hard work our Yellow Jackets put in to achieve their goals.
