Yellow Jacket cheerleaders play a huge part in the North Augusta Community, specifically regarding social events. From football games to pep rallies, they always find a way to add a little more excitement to the festivities. With an end to the current season, tryouts for the upcoming school year are soon to be under way.
Taylor Spivey, a junior cheerleader on the Varsity squad, said, “Each year more and more girls tryout which always makes me super nervous that I won’t make the cut. This also pushes me to be the best I can to ensure my spot.”
Tessa Timmerman, a freshman cheerleader on the Junior Varsity squad, had similar ideas, as it stresses her out more as she feels it puts her spot on the team in jeopardy. Each girl that tries out has to fight for their chance to be one of the next Yellow Jacket cheerleaders.
Having a good mindset is a large aspect of success. Upon being asked what sort of mindset allows them to do their best, Elise Long, a sophomore cheerleader on the Junior Varsity squad, says “You have to stay focused. Focus is the key word in doing your best. We put a lot into the details of our performances and formations.”
Tryouts can be difficult with the stress of having to do your best in front of the judges while competing against a bunch of other girls to gain a spot on the team. Everyone has their individual struggles.
“I have forgotten parts of the cheers, chants, and dances, but the most important thing is to keep going and recover. This makes your mistakes less noticeable,” says Spivey
Each girl seemed to be fairly confident they would make the team with their skillsets.
Spivey said “even with my confidence, I will not back down from trying as hard as I can and I will push myself and take each chance I gets to practice, since my is not guaranteed.”
As the team transitions into try-outs, the women working to earn a spot will give their all. Working as hard as they possibly can, a team of capable young women will be built, and the new season will begin.
