Even through tough circumstances, our North Augusta volleyball program is going strong. Senior team member, Lily Butler, was asked her opinion of how volleyball during the pandemic was being played. When asked, she said “I think the precautions being taken are very helpful to everyone’s safety. I think with anything now it is hard to find a perfect solution, but I am thankful for the people who have made this season possible.” A few precautions that the volleyball team takes include wearing their mask until they are on the court, wiping down the volleyballs after every practice or game, and staying 6ft apart on the sideline bench. Butler shared, “If I could change one thing about playing volleyball in a pandemic it would be to have a normal schedule. Due to our season being pushed back we have limited games, so it is a lot shorter than a normal season. Typically, we have more time to bond as a team and learn how to play well together, but this year we went straight into region games.”
Volleyball is claimed to be a very high-risk sport during the pandemic, since the ball is being touched by both teams per rally. When asked about this aspect of the sport, Butler says “My biggest fear while playing volleyball in a pandemic is definitely the risk of giving it to family members.” As the volleyball team is taking precautions, some other actions are taking place to keep all players and coaches safe. Butler also states, “A major difference I have noticed between games during a pandemic versus a normal game would be shaking hands with the other team. In volleyball we shake hands with the other team before and after matches, and now we just give an awkward wave.”
Just as the season started, it is soon coming to an end. Butler was asked if she thinks the season will end early or if she and her teammates will be able to complete the season. Her response was, “I really hope we are able to finish our season, but of course there is no telling what will happen. As one of eight seniors, I know how much volleyball has meant to our lives and I really hope that all of us get to play through this last season together. We have really tried to play every game like it is our last because at any moment it can be taken away from us.” Uncertain what will happen next, Butler and her teammates are trying to make the most of the season, and are wishing for the best.
